Wanderlust Tag

I know this tag is now quite old, but I love the questions and thought it would be a good way for you to get to know me a little. Or at least something about my travel experiences and philosophies. I fell in love with the idea of travel long before travel was even a possibility for me. Once I started though, I knew I was never going to be happy just sitting in one place.

1. Your most treasured passport stamp?

I think I’m going to have to say Thailand. For me, Thailand was my first destination as a solo traveller (albeit one about to join a tour). Before then, I’d always been shy, and completely lacked the confidence to travel, let alone go to a foreign country, especially one that didn’t have English as a first language. Getting on the plane (and not getting straight back off again), and going on my first adventure was an absolutely life changing experience for me. I’m now so much more confident, as well as feeling like I will never be able to travel enough.

2. Can you recite your passport # from memory if asked?

No. When I was in SE Asia, perhaps I could have, just because I had to fill out forms so frequently, but I definitely wouldn’t even know where to start now.

3. Preferred method of travel: planes, trains or automobiles?

I am going to rule out planes straight away, mostly because I hate airports, but it’s not so easy to decide between trains and cars. I love the freedom of a road trip, and being able to make unplanned stops, but I also love trains. Trains offer such an affordable way to see a country, without dealing with planes, and I do love just staring out a window and watching the world go by. Doing that for hours is just heavenly.

4. Top 3 travel items?

I’m assuming this is not including the obvious essentials (passport, money, visa).

  1. Camera – Not only so I have something to look back on and relive some awesome (or not so awesome) memories. But I also genuinely love photography and I’m trying to make more time for it.
  2. Oversized Scarf – Perhaps a bit of an odd one, but I feel the cold so easily, and public transport seems to universally be either over air-conditioned, or not air conditioned at all. It also makes a great pillow.
  3. Dry Shampoo – For when I still want to look halfway decent in photos, but have just spent 18 hours on an overnight train and want to make the most of the day.

5. Hostel or hotel?

Hostel. I’m naturally a pretty shy person, so while hostels can be confronting, and least I’m surrounded by other like minded people. In a hotel, I find it’s just too easy to become a hermit.

6. Are you a repeat visitor or do you explore new places?

I haven’t travelled enough yet to repeat visit, and there are far too many things on my ‘Must Visit’ list at the moment. However, everywhere that I have been too, I would definitely love to see again.

7. Do you read up on your destination (culture, history, safety) or do you wing it?

A bit of both, depending on the type of destination. When I went to SE Asia, I made sure I would have clothing appropriate for the climate, as well as to ensure I wouldn’t offend anyone. Beyond that though, I prefer to have a list of places or things I’d like to see or do, but I’m always open to suggestions from locals and/or fellow travellers. It’s also nice to immerse yourself in the culture without having a preconceived idea of what you’ll experience. I’ve visited a number of places, that had I read up on them first, I probably wouldn’t have gone, but because I didn’t know, I ended up having an amazing experience that perhaps I would have otherwise missed out on.

8. Favourite travel website?

I don’t actually think I have one. Instead, I love reading travel blogs. While I’m stuck at home, they give me inspiration (and a lot of jealously), but when I’m planning or on a trip, they provide such an invaluable resource.

9. Where would you recommend a friend to visit? Name city & why.

Oh this is hard. Umm. I’m indecisive, so here are 2.

  1. Bangkok – It’s such a culture shock for anyone coming from a Westernised culture, but it has such an amazing assortment of food, touristy things, and cultural things, while still challenging you and being just rather fascinating.
  2. Queenstown – Ultimate adventure destination for the adrenalin junkies, but also smack bang in the middle of some of the most stunning scenery you will ever lay your eyes on. You can have a completely chilled out visit, or do something crazy every day.

10. You’re leaving tomorrow, money is no option, where are you going?

Europe. Nowhere in particular, but everywhere. It’s somewhere I’ve been wanting to go to for ages, but I either haven’t had the money or the time. I’m really hoping I get the chance to explore Europe next year though, so fingers crossed! I’m about to spend all of my savings on a training course, but hopefully that will lead to a job with more money. I will definitely get there one day though, even if it sends me broke!

    1. I really didn’t think it would change me that much, but when I came home, even my mum said that I was so full of confidence. From someone who has always been shy, to now someone who is considering moving out to Japan, I’m so grateful for how travel has changed me!
Europe will happen, it’s just a matter of when 🙂

      1. Oh wow, you’re considering moving to Japan? Japan was actually my first solo travel experience and I loved everything about it! I think you’ll have an amazing time living there, if you end up doing that 🙂

      2. I’m hoping to qualify as an ESL teacher next year and Japan is somewhere I’d love to see, so I thought I’d put the two together, and potentially teach in Japan. My best friend has been to Japan a couple of times and made me very jealous when I saw photos so it’s definitely somewhere I can’t wait to see 🙂
