I started out so well, keeping to my posting schedule, but then life got in the way. Over the past two weeks I finished my first semester of online study, started a new semester and got accepted into a CELTA course! It’s been pretty hectic, and overwhelming.
Last year, I completed a Bachelor of Engineering but failed to secure work. Unfortunately, I was very much in the majority in regards to finding work, with a large proportion of my graduating class electing to pursue graduate studies. I knew that was a path that I didn’t want to go down. I don’t particularly enjoy research, and had always envisioned myself in a more industry based role. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out that way.
For the first six months of this year I was unemployed and had no idea what I was going to do with myself. Going into my engineering degree, there had been so much talk about there being a shortage of engineers that getting a job should be a given. As such, I never really took the time to develop a backup plan.
In July this year, I got a part time job as a maths tutor. I’d tutored through high school and university and loved it, so couldn’t have been happier. As I settled into a routine, I realised that tutoring or teaching is something that I had a genuine love and passion for, so why not see what options were out there to pursue it as a career?
I’d looked at English language teaching a couple of times previously. The prospect of a job I knew I’d enjoy, with the ability to travel as well was very tempting, so when I found a good opportunity, I applied. I had my interview two weeks ago now, and was accepted! For the first time in a long time, I feel like I’ve got a chance to do something I both enjoy, and will hopefully earn me an income.
I start the course in January, and I will be studying it part time. That means, I will be working part time, completing my CELTA course part time, as well as studying online full time. I’m nervous, but excited. I think it will be a challenge, but after this past year, I’m up for it.
